Audi’s biggest gamble for India has worked. Despite pricing it a tad higher than its competition, the A4 has managed to get off to a good start. The locally assembled A4 is available with two engines - a slightly dull diesel and the rip-roaring 3.2 FSI V6 Quattro at the other end. Both do their job rater well, with the diesel returning good economy while the 3.2 FSI can keep up with several sports coupes. Performance apart, the A4 offers good ride, decent levels of kit and those eye-catching day-time running lights. Audi is planning to release more variants of the A4 – including a 2.7 liter TDI and cheaper 1.8 liter turbo petrol. With a sales and service network that nearly matches its rivals, Audi’s smallest sedan makes for a competent buy.

BMW 6 SERIES 650i

When it first came out some five years ago, everybody was aghast at how the 6 series was styled. It didn’t look as razor sharp as the first gen from the 1980s, and most thought BMW had killed an icon. But time had changed, and BMW saw it prudent to make it more appealing to the Cote D’Azur residents. It has worked, with the 6 series being moderately successful across markets. For India, BMW has stayed away from the 630i or the 3.0-liter turbo diesel, instead have opted for the 650i. This V8 has masses of torque, has a rorty soundtrack and can stay with a lot of sports cars in a straight line. It can’t however hold a candle to the more genuine 2+2s or two-seaters like the 911. It can however carry four in relative comfort, with their luggage and travel great distances without missing a beat. Choose from the more expensive convertible or cheaper coupe, and you will find it does attract a lot of eyeballs.

MERCEDES – BENZ C-CLASS

The all-new C-Class is Mercedes’ answer to the BMW 3 series and the new Audi A4. Unlike its sporty counterparts, it doesn’t show its muscles, but make no mistake; this Merc has some serious legs too. MITSUBISHI PAJERO

The Pajero is probably the most obvious SUV to buy if you want the world to know you’ve got new money. It’s also spacious with very good ride quality thrown in. the diesel engine has good low-end torque but isn’t of the common rail variety. Top end performance is lackluster while handling can be termed ‘okay’, if you don’t care about it. It’s got its quirks, but it’s capable of making your cheeks pink.
