Probably among the best-looking cars in its segment, the Chevrolet Aveo is what most people would like from their car. Apart from an attractive exterior, it has good looking interiors that have dollops of chrome and rich fabric. Overall space is fairly decent, while ride quality isn't bad either. The gearbox however is a bit squishy while the handling, well, isn't enthusiastic either. So a far, Chevrolet has offered two engines for the Aveo the 1.4-litreand 1.6-litrepetrol. The 1.4has fairly good torque spread and power delivery is good to keep up with the Joneses. The 1.6 dual overhead camshafts have a bit more power and torque, at 101 bhp and 15 kgm, so it performs slightly better. There is no diesel option for now, but expect a 1.5-litre engine developed by GM to feature in the coming years. Overall, it's the kind of car that will impress your neighbors.

SKODA FABIA

This is the Skoda’s cheapest car on sale in India. That should be reason enough to buy it, because the trappings of a Skoda are always dipped in quality, with the kind of solidity that is generally found in battle tanks. The Fabia has exactly all these traits. It’s a neat handling small car with goof grip and ride and all the makings of an ideal er, small car. These are tons of features, including airbags and ABS, sunroof, all power down and up windows, parking sensors... the works. It’s also spacious enough for four and their luggage. Engine choices include slightly anemic three cylinder petrol, relatively fast four cylinder petrol and a torquey three cylinder diesel. So what’ wrong with the Fabia? Well, it’s the price, which is why you don’t see many of them on the road, despite having been around for a year. Ignore that and it is probably the best big hatch in the country today.

The multijet makes its appearance once again, so you get an expensive hatch that is cheaper to run than many, even though it can’t exactly seat four in comfort. You can however choose from among different colors, body sticker styles, interior accoutrements, trims and so on. But that’s as boring as alphabet soup. What you need is the full-fat Abrath with its 135bhp, god-awesome handling and detailing to die for. We hear it being considered for India.
